From 21 August 2023, freight carriers and transport companies will face an issue: from this date at the latest, it will be compulsory to install the Gen2V2 tachograph in all newly registered trucks over 3.5 tonnes. However, conventional hardware such as download keys no longer work with the new tachographs. This means: an update (often cost-intensive), or the need to find another solution.
We have the simple solution for you: The TachoKEY download key is V2 smart tachograph ready and can read out all data without any problems, regardless of the tachograph. Together with the TachoAPP and the TachoEU portal, reading out the tachograph and driver card is uncomplicated, secure and legally compliant.

The smart download key for reading out your driver card and tachograph
The TachoKEY is your download key for simple, local readout of your trucks' tachograph and driver card data. It is compatible with all current tachograph models. Thanks to optimal pre-configuration, all functions are triggered automatically when plugged into the tachograph.
Effortless data transfer with the TachoKEY - simple, secure, fast
When downloading at the tachograph, the driver card data and the activities of the vehicle unit from the last 90 days, as well as their technical data, events and faults are downloaded - simple, secure and fast. You just have to pay attention to the colour of the LED signal on the download key or the transfer bar on the TachoAPP, to be able to read the current status of the data transfer. Via the TachoAPP, the data is transferred directly to the TachoEU online portal and archived in compliance with the law. There, you can view and process your driver card and tachograph data at any time.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
To start the download and transfer the data, you need the TachoAPP. You can download this free of charge here in the Google Play Store. There are also plans to make the app available for iOS. As soon as it is available in the App Store, you will find out here.
You also need an account in the TachoEU online portal (subject to charges). There, the data is archived in compliance with the law and you can access it from any computer with Internet access. You can register using the following link: portal.tacho.eu
The driver card must be read out every 28 days. The mass memory should be read out every 90 days. Afterwards, the data must be archived according to (EC) No. 561/2006. All you need to do is insert the TachoKEY into the tachograph after 28 days to archive the data in the TachoEU portal.
In this case, you are at risk of facing fines - as a business owner in commercial transport, you must ensure that you can fulfil your legal obligations at all times. This includes the regular read out and legally compliant archiving of tachograph and driver card data.
Initially, newly registered commercial vehicles over 3.5 t will be affected from 21 August 2023. However, there are also staggered retrofitting obligations: By 31 December 2024, all vehicles > 3.5 t with analogue or digital tachographs in cross-border traffic must be converted to 2nd generation Version 2 tachographs. Commercial vehicles over 3.5 t with Version 1 smart tachographs have an deadline to convert by 21 August 2025.
Note: Commercial vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 t in cross-border traffic are also subject to mandatory tachographs from 1 July 2026 and must have Version 2 smart tachographs.

No, only the download key is required to read out the driver card. However, it does depend on the version. The TachoKEY can download tachograph and driver card data.
The readout device is a kind of USB stick for the digital tachograph. You can download and view the data from the tachograph. This is done quickly and automatically, without pressing any buttons.
